Anorexia Nervosa
What is Anorexia Nervosa?
Anorexia Nervosa is a severe eating disorder characterized by an intense fear of gaining weight, a distorted body image, and self-imposed starvation. Individuals with this disorder often see themselves as overweight, even when they are underweight, and they may go to extreme lengths to lose weight, including excessive dieting, exercising, or purging behaviors. This condition can lead to severe physical and psychological health issues and requires immediate medical attention.
What are the symptoms of Anorexia Nervosa
The symptoms of Anorexia Nervosa can be both physical and psychological, including:
- Severe Weight Loss: Noticeable and significant weight loss or failure to maintain a healthy weight for age and height.
- Intense Fear of Gaining Weight: Persistent fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, even when underweight.
- Distorted Body Image: A distorted perception of body weight and shape, often feeling overweight despite being underweight.
- Preoccupation with Food: Obsessive thoughts about food, dieting, and calorie intake, often accompanied by a ritualistic approach to eating.
- Extreme Dietary Restrictions: Limiting food intake to minimal amounts, avoiding certain foods or food groups, and adopting unusual eating habits.
- Excessive Exercise: Compulsive exercise routines aimed at burning calories, often regardless of physical exhaustion or injury.
- Physical Symptoms: These can include fatigue, dizziness, thinning hair, brittle nails, dry skin, cold intolerance, and in severe cases, the absence of menstruation (amenorrhea).
- Behavioral Changes: Social withdrawal, irritability, depression, anxiety, and a general decline in overall mental well-being.
What are the types of Anorexia Nervosa?
Anorexia Nervosa is typically classified into two main types:
- Restricting Type: Individuals with this type primarily lose weight through dieting, fasting, or excessive exercise. They do not engage in regular binge-eating or purging behaviors.
- Binge-Eating/Purging Type: This type involves episodes of binge eating followed by purging behaviors, such as self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives, diuretics, or enemas.
